Woke up this morning to find these on the door step
Courtesy of ebay and prime timbers.
1 lump of wenge to go on my old P-bass copy which is going to go fretless. I lifted the fret board as the truss rod was knackered and thought as the old one is a bit past its best and as I have another fretted 4 string I might as well have a fretless to hang on the wall.
1 lump of wenge for a short scale bass I'm hoping to build sort of an eb0 copy, As I have a few medical problems with my wrists and a short scale is a lot more comfortable to play although the mrs is talking about buying me an epi ebo for valentines so that plan might change. I'm supposed to be getting some sepale for a neck and body to go on ebay as a buy it now, deals been done just waiting on the ad going on
And finally a nice piece of quilted maple to go on to a short scale guitar for the daughter, she wants to learn but nothing comerically available suits her teeny hands, any thing short enough has a baseball bat neck and weighs more than she does
So plan is take my RR jackson neck for a template because its nice and skinny make it shorter and make something light. Probably also in the SG style as she is an AC/DC fan

The Maple looks very nice.
I have just put a Wenge fretboard on my current build, I don't know if it's common with Wenge as this is the first time I have used it but I found it very brittle. I tapered the fretboard to the neck shape then slotted and had small pieces chip off the edges, generally where the grain was a bit open and "running off", fortunately by the time I radiussed it the chips were sanded off. If I slotted, radiussed then tapered I don't think I would have had the chipping problem.

The maple is real nice looking. The plan is to give the daughter something real nice looking to keep the enthusiasm up. Plus she can have a hand in the building so hopefully it will give her that extra reason to look after it and put the effort into learning !
I was a bit worried coming from e bay and all but I can't find anything local and when other people have seen the location as being N Ireland the postage goes through the roof !!! Even though I can send stuff heavier in the other Direction for half what gets quoted coming this way. It postage would cheaper to get a body blank and neck blank from stew-macs trhan from across the English channel, work that out Luckily no such drama's with Prime timbers Me thinks I shall be a regular if this takes off
So any recommendations for a light weight body wood

A bood light weight wood is Poplar AKA American Tulipwood. It sounds good, is cheap but has crap figure to it so it will have to be painted.
Andy at Prime Timbers is spot on. His stuff is always good quality and his postage is cost price. He sells wood every week so he knows his stuff.

Thanks for mentioning Prime Timbers - Been looking for new tonewood suppliers. The wood on his ebay shop looks good - I'll be buying some.

I figured he'd have more esoteric items held back - Its good to widen my wood sources. I did get some beautiful walnut & cherry from a place called British Hardwoods Online, they specialise in Oak mainly but every now and again they have some really nice woods. Got some great maple for necks there as well.
There's also a wood yard here in Manchester where I got some great ash - Its a case of wandering in and rooting through. In a way, it reminds me of my days rooting through record shops, looking for something special.

Thing is do I put frets back on it or do i keep it fretless??
